Kapil Sibal has done it again, if screwing up Education, Politics was not enough, the now Telecom minister of India has declared that every picture, video, article, blog post that goes online in India needs to be censored, checked by Humans, reviewed and only then be made available online.
The New York Times Reads -
The Indian government has asked Internet companies and social media sites like Facebook to prescreen user content from India and to remove disparaging, inflammatory or defamatory content before it goes online, three executives in the information technology industry say.
Now, Can Kapil Sibal seriously think that this is a practical thing to do? He personally asked Facebook, Google, Yahoo and many such websites to manually check all content that is posted online.Imagine the man power, logistics and money needed to do that, it is easy to just declare but not so easy to follow up.India cannot afford to use tax money to do this, when there are thousands of people under the poverty line asking for help.
Internet is the one true place where people can voice their opinions about anything, it is not fair to take this away from us.I actually felt that this is an impossible task until I read, again in the New York Times Blog that cities like Mumbai already have special units to check the content of Social Networking Sites Such as Facebook and Orkut Etc.
Here you can see the number of appeals made by countries to remove Content from Google each month in 2011.
