Wikipedia receives an immense amount of traffic, millions of people visit the site every day.This allows Wikipedia to make millions of dollars each year, but it does not make use of this potential.Wikipedia runs only on donations at the moment.

Wikipedia became famous as a non-profit, peoples website which did not support any ads on its site.If Wikipedia starts accepting ads now, it will lose some of its charm and also those people who have contributed many articles towards Wikipedia will start to ask for a stake in the revenue.So there are quite a few problems, even if they decide to monetize Wikipedia.

When asked about the same issue, Wikipedia replied-

While we’ve always said that we’re opposed to having advertising on Wikipedia, we’ve never said "absolutely never"
