Any computer or internet user needs to have some form of antivirus software on their computer, and just because you use an Apple Mac doesn't make you exempt from that statement. For large corporates with large server room’s antivirus is just as important as making sure the servers are behind several inches of reinforced and fireproof steel.
As long as your computer is connected to the internet is vulnerable to viruses and malicious attack from hackers and the like.

Luckily for Microsoft Windows users Microsoft have now bought out Microsoft Security Essentials, which is free to download and use, and isn’t intrusive to your working day, but instead just sits in the background keeping you safe.How it Works
Antivirus software works in two ways; it sits in the background and monitors and scans all the files in your system. It then uses a virus dictionary to check that none of the files contain and of the code or files which exist in this dictionary. The second way it works is to monitor suspicious behaviour, this includes things known as port monitoring, data capturing or spyware which all secretly and illegally collect data about you.
Email Viruses
Another common practice of people who spread viruses is by email. They send you an email with an attachment which once downloaded begin infecting your PC and damaging or destroying files. All virus scanners now come with the option to begin scan files before you download them and almost all mail clients now check attachments for viruses before they can be downloaded.
Be Vigilant
Unfortunately virus scanners only know about viruses which exist within their dictionaries, which are being constantly updated. This means that if someone releases a brand new virus you may not be completely protected from it. The best thing you can do is to be vigilant online; only visit sites that you know and trust, don’t give out personal information unless sites are secure and only open emails and attachments from people you know. Treat the online world like you would your personal details and credit cards in the real world and you should remain safe from the threat they provide.
