The Key to a Natural Link Building Strategy

Links are the 'streets' that connect the 'map' that Google (and other search engines) use to crawl the web. Boosting your off-site link building strategy is as important as taking care of your on-site status. As SEO experts point out, a valuable link can be worth more than 1,000 words of content.

Google and search engines in general, care and look at what appears on your site. This is why, from an SEO point of view, it is essential to plan the keywords and content we use on our websites in advance. However, our on-site content is not all that matters. There are a number of key considerations that you should keep in mind when planning your link building strategy.

Quantity versus quality
This is probably the most important piece of advice to consider regarding off-site link building. When it comes to link building, quantity (of links) matters, but so does quality. Choose sites that your target audience is likely to read; sites that include relevant content and are tidy, organised and coherent.

Remember, not all sites have the same value for Google. In other words, having your site linked from the BBC website will have much more relevance than having a link from an unpopular, small blog, which is only one year old.

Google has many tools to decipher which sites are popular and trustworthy. In general terms, relevant and reliable sites link to other sites with similar characteristics, which is why they keep growing in popularity and authority in the eyes of Google. If you get one of those quality sites linking to your site, Google will consider your site as important – "if BBC says so... it must be good".

You should also keep other considerations in mind when choosing quality sites for your link building strategy, such as their page rank, age and trustworthiness.

Choose your anchor text wisely
There are thousands of sites and keywords to go for when looking to boost your SEO. Unfortunately (and luckily) you can't use them all; in fact, abuse of keywords in your content will be more detrimental than beneficial for your site.

Study your keywords carefully and go for a maximum of three that you want to push, no more. Remember this; while diversity of keywords is an advantage in your on-site content, it is probably better pushing only a few words in your off-site link building strategy.

While Google knows your site and monitors every anchor text you publish there, off-site link building spreads this very method across the whole internet, which is why sometimes it is advisable to focus on only a couple of specific keywords.

The more links pointing to your site with the right keywords, the more likely it is for Google to think "Wait! Everybody is linking to this site, using this keyword, therefore it must me important!' and, therefore, the more likely your site's relevance is to grow in terms of SEO.

A word of caution: if you over-optimise the keyword 'anchor text' links back to your website you could suffer a penalty from Google. So you may also want to promote some standard url links and 'click here' anchor text links too so that your link-building remains natural in the eyes of search engines.

Of course it is not that easy, but it is a fact that the more sites link to you, the more beneficial it will be for your website.
